Margaret Volunteer in Cartagena, Colombia

How would you describe/rate your experience working with the ABV staff in the USA?
Excellent. Very efficient and appropriate. I will recommend them – sometimes people ask me about how I end up where I end up!

How was the local ABV Director and the support provided in-country? Also excellent. I felt very comfortable with the level of support.
What was surprising for you? No real surprises. Happy to see a much bigger middle class in Colombia than 30 years ago (when I was here)

What was the most difficult thing you experienced? Subpar training of the staff at the children’s center. Poor hygiene ( ie: one cup and a bucket to give water to 20-30 kids)
Not always best use of resources.

Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc)
I think the ABV website covers it very well. “Just go with it” and find your place is always the best advice.

Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):
I am a 66 year old retired nurse who live in Colombia fro 1973-83. I wanted to revisit it. I found ABV from a casual internet search. It was just what I wanted. A direct short term placement with some local support. It was not expensive and I might repeat it!

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
Yes, I might be too old for this but can do it if you think appropriate. Thank you for everything!
