My Favorite Memory: It was, when I had the opportunity to visit and help all the children that permanently live in the Clinic to brush their teeth. Most of them were really exited of the teeth brush technique class.
I was surprised that: It was a personal surprise. It has been the first time I had traveled alone to another country, even I speak Spanish, I thought it was going to be more difficult and stressful to meet people, but I get a very nice surprise. I was able to meet people from all around the world, and actually make some friends, I never felt alone..
The most difficult thing I experienced: I was expecting to have the opportunity to treat more patients in the clinic, I was disappointed because of the number of patients that usually arrive to the clinic – They explain me that because of the rainy days patients were not able to arrive to the clinic. Next time maybe I would prefer to go to a more rural/poor places for a couple of days, or on the weekends to treat patients.
My best received lesson: That when I was less expecting a lesson, and adventure or a new friend, is when this entire thing arrived. Never be waiting, the thing will arrive when they have to
Tip for future volunteers: Be open to new cultures, languages and experiences. More open you are, more you will be able to receive from the country and the people you will be working with.
How would you rate your experience working with the ABV staff, both in the USA, and in-country? The staff in the United States made the procedure easy and answered all my questions very quickly and the Maria Elena in Peru continued the exceptional attention, she was very helpful during all my stay.
How would you describe your accommodation, ie: host family, on-site, shared housing etc: The accommodations were great. The host family was very helpful, make me feel comfortable and they were worried about my needs. The host family gave me delicious typical food. They make me feel as part of the family.
Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Yes
