Colby Volunteer in Arusha, Tanzania

How would you describe/rate your experience working with the ABV staff in the USA? In the USA the staff was very efficient and would respond to emails and phone calls very quickly. I feel that they were organized and let me know information in a timely manner

How was the local staff in the project (Dominic) and the support provided in-country? Dominic was great, I trusted him completely and he tried his best to help us with whatever we needed. Christopher was also great. I never had any issues with him and he was always very kind, welcoming, and funny. Stephano (the cook) was also very nice and there were no issues with him.

What was the most difficult thing you experienced? The culture shock at first was pretty hard because I am from a very small town but I adjusted quickly and ended up loving it

What was the one thing you wished you were better prepared for? Learning the language before I arrived in the country

Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc) be sure you have a backpack to use on weekend trips because it is wiser than a shoulder bag. I brought my own sheets and pillowcase and even though they are provided and that made me feel better personally. Isolation gowns is a medical supply I did not bring that I wish I would have. Bring multi-vitamins and protein bars because the food may not be as nutritious as you may like.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Yes.
