My Favorite Memory: Being mobbed (“welcome back Nathan!”) by Jordan, Timothy and Nabideau (3-5 year old kids) every time I returned to the house after being gone for any amount of time.
I was surprised that….All the kids seemed to be entrusted with a lot of responsibility. They worked hard without (much) complaint – I made sure not to slack while I was there.
The most difficult thing I experienced was….people would ask for money. It puts you in an awkward position, because most of the requests were for “good causes”, but I couldn’t just give out money to everyone.

My best received lesson…That you don’t need a lot to be happy.
Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc)
The list provided by ABV was pretty good – the only thing I didn’t really use was the bug spray. Bring lots of batteries too if you are bringing electronics that need them – the AA batteries I bought in Uganda didn’t work with my camera. Any donations would be appreciated as well (clothing, school supplies, toys, etc.)
Personal Paragraph (Testimonial):
I had a great experience in Uganda. ABV prepared me well pre-trip and everything was well organized in country. I would definitely recommend them to anyone considering volunteering abroad.

How would you rate your experience working with the ABV staff, both in the USA, and in-country?
Good, Sarah was always prompt, professional and helpful via email, as was Peter in Uganda.
How would you describe your accommodation ( ie: host family, on-site, shared housing etc)
They were about what I expected – nothing luxurious but comfortable. The electricity in Uganda is very unreliable, but that didn’t really affect my experience. The host family was very friendly and attentive to my needs.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
Yes.
