My Favorite Memory: There have been so many amazing memories here in Cusco. I would definitely have to say when my friend and I volunteered at the orphanage we became very close to the girls. We first did not know what to expect when volunteering with teenage girls but the love I felt each time I walked in the door was incredible. I would have to say there was never one specific memory because everything here has really been awesome.
I was surprised that…. I was surprised that we were placed in an orphanage full of teenage girls. I was pretty nervous but soon realized that all they need to be is loved and you will receive the same kindness and love. I was also surprised at how close I grew to other volunteers here serving with A Broader View. Because of this organization I have met people who I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life.
The most difficult thing I experienced was….
Probably just being away from my family and trying to communicate in another language. Luckily we had a great teacher and host family where we were taught of the customs and cultures of Peru and treated like part of the family.
My best received lesson… was at the orphanage. I have learned to be much more grateful for what I have back at home. One night one of the coordinators at the orphanage gave a pep talk about how the girls needed to be grateful for what they had and it really put everything into perspective for me. I feel as though I have grown infinitely as a person here through all of my experiences.
Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc) I was very fortunate to get involved with an awesome travel group and all of the trips were coordinated wonderfully. I would recommend bringing things for the orphanage and coming with an open mind. It was amazing to me to see how grateful everyone was down here for the small and simple things in life.
Personal Paragraph (Testimonial):
This trip has changed my life. I have grown infinitely as an individual through experiences of working at the orphanage, our coordinator, and other volunteers involved with A Broader View. I would recommend this company to everyone. They are professional, helpful, and I have become part of another family. This has been the best experience of my life and I wish everyone could experience what I have here.
How would you rate your experience working with the ABV staff, both in the USA, and in-country? AMAZING. I could not have asked for better-everyone has been extremely helpful and wonderful!
How would you describe your accommodation (ie: host family, on-site, shared housing etc) I LOVE MY HOUSE MOM! She has been such a breath of fresh air during this whole experience. She was always there for my friend and I would seriously consider her to be my mother away from home. She was very knowledgable about Cusco and traveling and provided many opportunities for us. Sometimes homesickness would kick in down here and she always provided love, support, and comfort in an unknown place. She is an amazing person that I would hope to keep in touch with forever.
Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Of course!
