My Favorite Memory: Taking the children to another village for an afternoon snack. It gave the children a chance to get away from the orphanage and show us something they knew.

I was surprised that…. The orphanage was new 2 months before we arrived but I was surprised how much stuff they had. I was also surprised at how much the school had as well. The teachers were more educated then I anticipated.

The most difficult thing I experienced was…. Adapting to the way locals treated volunteers. It was not in a bad way just different then I expected!

My best received lesson… Every country has a different way of living. Instead of trying to change it everyone needs to embrace it. I found a lot of volunteers trying to change a way of living to make it more like home but that’s not why we should be there!

Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc) For future volunteers I would recommend doing a safari or going to Zanzibar as part of their trip to Tanzania. Mosquito repellent is a good idea but I took way too much so just a small bottle is necessary for 1 person.

Personal Paragraph (Testimonial): My experience overall in Arusha was a positive one. I had an awesome time meeting the children as well as other volunteers. Everyone was super friendly and once I was used to the city, walking around became fun and exciting. Our host family was willing to show us around town and take us to places for locals and volunteers.

How would you rate your experience working with the ABV staff, both in the USA, and in-country? My experience with all the ABV staff was excellent!! Both in the USA and in-country were very helpful and willing to help whenever needed.

How would you describe your accommodation ( ie: host family, on-site, shared housing etc) Our accommodation was way better than I anticipated. It was very clean and tidy when we arrived and very welcoming.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Yes I am willing to speak to other potential volunteers.
