Volunteer Abroad Work Orphans in Cusco, Peru

My Favorite Memory: Looking in the eyes of a young, fairly unresponsive handicapped boy, smiling and having smile back. One of the other volunteers say, “I’ve never seen him smile like that before.”

I was surprised that…. The orphanage likely can’t function without volunteers.

The most difficult thing I experienced was…. Learning how little the orphanage has and how physically difficult the work of the staff is. Also, my Spanish was not good enough to communicate on a day to day basis with those not associated with my volunteer work.

My best received lesson… The spirit of the other volunteers is wonderful.

Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc). Bring medication for altitude sickness, be aware that you may have difficulty visiting ruins if you are at all afraid of heights, and traveling on local buses is cheap but can be scary. My local ABV coordinator Grettie was very helpful and the host mother I stayed with was wonderful.

Personal Paragraph (Testimonial) There is such great need in some places in the world — the orphanage at which I volunteered is one — and it’s not easy for me to believe that an individual like me can make a big difference; I came, I worked, I left. But, for those 5 days I did what I could and worked side-by-side with the staff to try to lightened their load a little bit. I helped wash clothes, hung them to dry, folded laundry, washed floors, fed children, brushed their teeth, and played little games with them. I looked into the eyes of kids desperate for attention and made them smile and laugh. What I did was small, things in the orphanage are still the same as before. But, was it appreciated? Yes. Would I do it again? Absolutely.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Yes!
