Molly Volunteer Abroad in Belize

My Favorite Memory:
Field trip to Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary with the kids and cave spelunking in ATM with the other volunteers.

I was surprised that….
The children were so well adjusted after all that they have been through! They were fun-loving and very happy. Also surprised by all of the sights to see in Belize, very beautiful yet poor country.

The most difficult thing I experienced was….
Adjusting to certain cultural aspects, such as the way staff treat others, particularly children. (i.e. corporal punishment)

My best received lesson…
People in third world countries, such as Belize, are trying to do the best they can with the limited amount of resources available to them. I realized how many things in life I took for granted.

Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc):
Bring granola bars and other snacks, because the same food for every meal gets old quickly. Bring vitamins because fruits and vegetables are not readily available. Take breaks and travel a bit. You see a whole different perspective of the country and get a chance to refresh.

Personal Paragraph (Testimonial)
My trip was an adventure from the moment I arrived. It was stressful at the beginning because there was no real structure or direction at the childrens’ home. After deciding to take charge after a few days, things went much better. By planning activities and and stepping up as a leader, I began to enjoy the days volunteering. The staff loved it as well and kept asking what things we (the volunteers) had planned for the kids each day. It took much creativity and patience on our part, but it payed off.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
Not at this time.
