Volunteer Abroad in Cusco

My Favorite Memory:
Various interactions with the people I encountered on the trip.

I was surprised that….
That I learned as much as I did. Whether it was about medicine, Peruvian history, or other people’s culture, I learned so much more than what I expected to.

The most difficult thing I experienced was….
The biggest challenge I faced was communicating with the nurses and nursing students at the clinic, and trying to teach them different methods that we have in America with respect to patient care. Other than that, I felt like every other aspect of the trip went very smoothly, and I always had help if I needed it.

My best received lesson…
Probably to never make any assumptions about people or a situation prior experiencing it. It’s important to always keep an open mind.

Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc)
Make a lot of effort to have meaningful interactions with people. Whether it is other volunteers or people you encounter at work or on trips, these relationships are the foundation upon which you’ll have a memorable experience. With respect to Cusco specifically, Peru has so many great sightseeing oppertunities and I highly recommend taking advantage of all that there is to do and see there.

Personal Paragraph (Testimonial)
Going to Peru was a great experience, and it promoted personal growth in ways that I did not anticipate. I arrived with an an open mind and the willingness to try anything, and I think that doing so enabled me to have such an enjoyable time. I would love to do another trip, and see what more I can do in third world countries.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
Absolutely.
